Is it limiting when you only have one thing to sell? It doesn’t have to be. This stall at a French market making a virtue of a consistent presentation, size and shape made me and many other passers-by stop.

I think it’s that consistency and gentle variation that sets it apart from the riot of colours and textures nearby. By playing it calm and letting the product speak for itself it doesn’t have to do too much to create a space in which to encourage shoppers to pick up and inhale the different scents.

Too much regimentation and it can be forbidding – but go too far the other way with lots of elaborate teetering, displays and shoppers are sometimes afraid to “mess-up” your handiwork. It’s a tricky balance but in the context of this particular retail environment I think they’ve got it just right.
